George Emlen has been a conductor and composer in Maine and Massachusetts for 40 years. In 1979 he founded (some say reactivated) the Acadia Choral Society, which has commissioned a choral work to be performed in May 2016 to celebrate ANP centennial. For many years he was organist and choir director at St. Mary’s-by-the-Sea in Northeast Harbor, and for 18 years he conducted the Mount Desert Summer Chorale. He taught at College of the Atlantic in 1980-81 and again during the 1990s.
For the past 32 years George has been music director of Revels, a Boston-based performing arts organization best known for its annual performances of The Christmas Revels, a rich and joyful celebration of the winter solstice. This will be George’s last season with Revels, and he looks forward to spending winters once again in Blue Hill and becoming an active part of the thriving arts community in Hancock County.
In addition to composing a choral work celebrating ANP, to be premiered in May 2016 by the Acadia Choral Society, George is proud to be organizing and leading the Centennial Singers, a group of 100 singers created especially for the August 27 “Gift of Acadia” ceremony at Jordan Pond House honoring the park on its 100th year.
