As a long-time volunteer working on trails and carriage roads at Acadia National Park (since 1995) and a Volunteer Crew Leader since 2004, I have often wondered about the people who have volunteered to help maintain the trails and carriage roads at ANP over the years. With the help of other Volunteer Crew Leaders, Friends of Acadia, and the historical records, I think I understand the whos, the whats, the whens, the wheres, and maybe even the whys.
In celebration of the Acadia Centennial, I plan to:
- Write a monograph that traces the activities of volunteers (as opposed to professional or paid workers) to help the National Park Service maintain, restore, and even re-open trails and carriage roads within Acadia National Park.
- Present the story in various venues on Mount Desert Island, including libraries and historical societies.
