The Maine Island Trail Association is a membership organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the wild islands of coastal Maine. We believe that Maine’s thousands of coastal islands are a national treasure and we have sought to build a community of educated boaters and volunteers who share our love of the coast. Together we maintain the Maine Island Trail—America’s first recreational water trail that spans over 200 islands and coastal sites along 375 miles of Maine’s shoreline.
Since the early days of the Maine Island Trail, Acadia National Park properties have figured prominently in our coastal water trail and Park staff have served as trusted advisers on matters ranging from responsible recreation to natural resource stewardship. To honor the nearly 30 years of partnership between Acadia and MITA, and to celebrate Acadia’s Centennial, the Maine Island Trail Association plans to engage volunteers in stewardship of park lands by coordinating a shoreline cleanup on one of Acadia’s island properties in 2016.
