We are a group of libraries in the communities surrounding Acadia National Park: Bangor Public Library, Bass Harbor Memorial Library, Blue Hill Public Library, Ellsworth Public Library, Jesup Memorial Library, Northeast Harbor Library, Somesville Library, and Southwest Harbor Public Library.
Are you interested in joining your friends and family in a community read that celebrates Acadia National Park, Mount Desert Island, and Maine? Please join your local libraries during the month of February for a cozy, winter read.
Our intent is to offer something that reflects all of our missions; reading, learning, and sharing. Our program is based on the very successful “Big Read” that was conducted for two years under the leadership of Jan Coates, Executive Director of Island Readers & Writers. Like the “Big Read” our program will be offered in the off-season. Rather than trying to bring people to the park we will celebrate the ones who are already here.
What is a community read? A community reading program gets everyone in one area to read and discuss the same book. For our community read, there will be three book offerings. For adults there is a non-fiction choice, The End of Night Sky: Searching for Natural Darkness in an Age of Artificial Light by Paul Bogard and a fiction choice, Spoonhandle by Ruth Moore. For children there is Small as an Elephant by Jennifer Richards Jacobson—this is appropriate for children 8 to 12 years old. These books will be available at your local library either for borrowing or purchasing at a reduced cost sometime in mid January 2016.
But don’t just read the book – also participate in the many activities that will be offered during the month of February around these books. Each library will offer something different. This will include book discussions, programs, exhibits, and other fun happenings.
The libraries involved cover most of the Acadia National Park area: Bangor Public Library, Bass Harbor Memorial Library, Blue Hill Public Library, Ellsworth Public Library, Jesup Memorial Library, Northeast Harbor Library, Somesville Library, Southwest Harbor Public Library. We will keep you posted as our plans develop. We are thrilled you will join us in our ‘One Park – One Read’ program!
