Located in the village of Southwest Harbor, Harbor House is a non-profit community service organization serving the communities of Mount Desert Island. With five key program areas and a roster of more than 40 health, fitness, educational, sports, community-based and youth-focused classes and activities, Harbor House serves every age group and every economic level and has done so for 49 years and counting.
Our mission is to provide a diversity of services which conserve and enrich the quality of life for all on Mount Desert Island.
Our facility is often used by the Southwest Harbor/Tremont Historical Society and the Acadia Senior College for talks and classes and we would make our facility available to other organizations that might need space for programming and events celebrating the Park’s centennial.
Each summer Harbor House orchestrates the Quietside Flamingo Festival, a 3 day event which includes a parade, children’s carnival, cocktail party and band performance. The theme changes each year and we thought this event would be a fun way to tie in with Acadia National Park’s Centennial Celebration. We would create a theme and event tagline that incorporated the slogan “Acadia’s Centennial: Celebrate Our Past! Inspire our Future”. It will be great fun to see how parade participants design their floats in honor of the park. The festival’s theme guides the decisions we make about the activities that surround the weekend’s core events and I could see the potential of partnering with another community organization such as the Historical Society or Library to offer some type of program or activity directly related to the Centennial Celebration slogan.
We will also be incorporating the Centennial theme into our Summer Camp program. Focusing on what Acadia offers our children to discovery about it beauty.
