During WW1 the European musicians working in the USA could not return for their normal summer vacations to Germany or Switzerland. Instead many found themselves in Seal Harbor, Maine. During the evenings they dined (often together) and performed. From time to time artist Leopold Seyffert (painter of the Steinway family portraits) drew, often by gaslight, images of their faces. Using traditional soft charcoal, a kneaded eraser and his pinkie finger he picked out the darks and lights of their sculpted faces. Artemis Gallery is proud to showcase this collection of portraits of ten German-American musicians, never showcased before on MDI. The drawings were made exactly the same year that the park was founded.Location: Artemis Gallery
