Impressions of Acadia – Hooked Rug Art Show

Sieur de Monts Rug
Date: Monday May 02, 2016 - Tuesday May 31, 2016
Time: 9:00am - 5:00pm

During the month of May, the Southwest Harbor Public Library will host an exhibit of hooked rugs by the Hancock County Hookers. In honor of the park’s 100th anniversary, rug hookers from across our county have joined together to create work based on the theme “Impressions of Acadia.”

Rug hooking has long been a traditional craft of Downeast Maine. Years ago, many local women hooked rugs for their own homes. They could also make a little extra money by selling their rugs. Many of these rugs were not only functional, but were works of art in themselves. Today, there are many rug hookers in Hancock County, carrying on this traditional craft, designing and hooking beautiful rugs. For this exhibit, they have created work that displays their connection to and feelings about Acadia National Park.
