Bar Harbor Music Festival 50th Golden Anniversary Season

Date: Sunday Jul 03, 2016 - Sunday Jul 31, 2016
Time: 4:00 p.m. - 10:30 p.m.

Description:

Acclaimed by Phi Beta Baton as “…one of the nation’s proving grounds for gifted young artists,” the Bar Harbor Music Festival has gained national recognition for providing essential performance opportunities for outstanding up-and-coming talent. Celebrating its 50th Anniversary Season in 2016, the Festival presents recitals, chamber music, pops, opera, new composers, jazz, and string orchestra concerts, along with an open forum, lecture-demonstrations, a Young Audience Series, and outreach programs like the free outdoor concert in Acadia National Park.

In celebration of the Acadia Centennial, the 2016 Bar Harbor Music Festival will feature the world premieres of two compositions commissioned by the Bar Harbor Music Festival and inspired by Acadia National Park.

On Wednesday, July 6, the opening night of the festival will feature Brass Venture, one of New England’s most prominent Brass quintets, performing the premiere of “Scenes from the Great Park” by Eric Ewazen, composer-in-residence at The Julliard School.

On Wednesday, July 27, the 44th Annual Acadia National Park Outdoor Concert by the Bar Harbor Music Festival String Orchestra conducted by Francis Fortier at the Blackwoods Campground Amphitheater will premiere “Songs of the Sky” by Edmund Cionek, composer-in-residence at the Bar Harbor Music Festival. This work will pair Native American vocal soloist George Neptune with the string orchestra. The piece will be performed again at the Festival Gala on Sunday, July 31.

Location: Recitals and string orchestra concerts take place at the Bar Harbor Congregational Church; tea concert, young audience series, private recitals, and lecture-demonstrations will be at the Maine Sea Coast Mission; dixieland jazz is at Jackson Laboratory's Commons; Pops and Gala concerts are located at the Bar Harbor Club; the Criterion Theatre is the venue for the Festival's opera, Don Giovanni; and the 44th Annual String Orchestra free outdoor concert takes place at Blackwoods Campground Amphitheater.
