Join us for the 2016 Art Meets Science Exhibit opening reception, Thursday, July 7, 5:00–7:00 p.m., Kinne Library, MDI Biological Laboratory.
A Fresh Field of Life: Artists, Naturalists and the Vision for Acadia is the theme of the MDI Biological Laboratory’s fifth annual Art Meets Science exhibit that features science-inspired work by local, national, and international artists. Concurrent with the centennial celebration of Acadia National Park, this year’s exhibition tells the story of art and science coming together on this island in the 19th century, the founding of a national park to preserve their co-existence, and how art and science connect our knowledge in the 21st century.
The MDI Biological Laboratory’s own history is linked to that of art on Mount Desert Island. George Dorr, one of the founders of Acadia National Park, convinced the small Harpswell laboratory to move to the island to join the community of those who studied its exceptional environment as artists and biologists. Once situated at Salisbury Cove, it became the MDI Biological Laboratory. Having a relationship with its exceptional location—with the physical environment and the community—is as important to the Laboratory and its scientists as it is for island artists.
Art Meets Science explores the similarities and intersections between Art and Science, advancing dialogue between artists, scientists, and members of our community who seek to discover and understand the natural world. Guided tours available weekly, pre-registration required: mdibl.org/events
