Date: Monday May 30, 2016
Time: 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Thanks to the generosity of Machias Savings Bank, admission to the Abbe Museum will be free to all visitors on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30, 2016. Stop by and see the Abbe’s new core exhibit, People of the First Light, which is the first large-scale permanent exhibit of its kind for the Museum.
As Maine’s first and only Smithsonian Affiliate, the Abbe’s free admission program aligns nicely with the Smithsonian’s goal of being easily accessible to the public, and it helps raise the Abbe’s statewide visibility as the only museum dedicated solely to sharing the story of the Wabanaki Nations. In 2016, the Abbe will be open free to the public on the following dates:
Opening Day (May 1)
Memorial Day (May 30)
Labor Day (September 5)
Indigenous Peoples’ Day (October 10)
Winter of 2016 (Thursdays–Saturdays in November and December)
The Abbe Museum was founded in 1926 and first opened to the public in 1928 as a private museum at Sieur de Monts Spring in Lafayette National Park (later renamed Acadia National Park). Early supporters included George B. Dorr, “the Father of Acadia,” and John D. Rockefeller Jr. The Abbe opened its year-round downtown museum in 2001 with permanent and changing exhibition galleries, spaces for educational programming, comfortable visitor amenities, and climate-controlled storage. As Maine’s first and only Smithsonian Affiliate, the Abbe’s mission is to inspire new learning about the Wabanaki Nations with every visit.Location: Abbe Museum, 26 Mount Desert St, Bar Harbor, ME 04609
